August 23-29 Safety Initiative.
Project Airbrake
Brake Safety week is Aug 23-29, 2026.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has designated Aug. 23–29 as Brake Safety Week , a North American safety initiative focused on keeping commercial vehicles operating with properly maintained brake systems.
Keep Drivers Safe
By combining inspections, maintenance awareness and industry education, CVSA aims to reduce brake-related violations and help prevent commercial vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities. The initiative reinforces a simple message: safe brakes are a shared responsibility and an essential part of keeping North America’s roadways safe.
What To Expect During The CSVA Brake Safety Week 2026
During both the announced and unannounced brake safety enforcement campaigns, commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct brake system inspections on large trucks and buses throughout North America to identify brake-system violations.
Throughout the week, certified inspectors in the U.S., Canada and Mexico will conduct commercial vehicle inspections with added attention on brakes. This year’s focus is brake drums and rotors , which can reduce braking performance when damaged and may create additional roadway hazards if broken components become dislodged. Vehicles with serious brake or other out-of-service violations will be removed from service until repairs are completed.
Brake Safety Week also emphasizes prevention through education. Drivers, fleet operators and technicians are encouraged to perform thorough pre- and post-trip inspections and address brake issues before vehicles hit the road.
Secondary Checks Later this Year
One-Day Brake Safety Initiative
There will be an unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement initiative, which may be held at any time! Be prepared and ensure your truck passing inspection.
Focus Area:
Inspectors will be reporting inspections and brake-related out-of-service violations, inspectors will also capture and provide data on the condition of the brake drum and rotor – the focus area for this year’s Brake Safety Week.
